Ever since J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar linked to create some of their earliest work as a producer/emcee combo, there has been a rumor out there that the two would be putting out an album together.

Over time though, that rumor dwindled with each casting major doubt over whether that would ever happen. Now, in 2018, we’re getting an update on the potentially monster collaborative project.

During an interview with Angie Martinez, Cole, who rarely does interviews, was asked about the potential project. The North Carolina native’s response? Not great if you were expecting anything more than a vague letdown.

“It’s not that I wouldn’t want work with [Kendrick Lamar], that’s not the case,” he said, before pointing out that people didn’t previously pressure Prince and Michael Jackson to create collaborative LP.

Angie then pointed out that Ab-Soul was the one who suggested there was an album between the two hip-hop superstars in progress two years ago. “Oh nah. He might be talking about when we originally got up to work. This was years ago. We just did a few songs. We did a bunch of ideas—put it like that. It was nothing… Like, you wouldn’t call it ‘an album.’ You wouldn’t call it nothin’ like that.

“It didn’t come from nowhere,” Cole continued. “Not ’cause it’s never gonna happen, but because it’s not right now. And I don’t like teasing or playin’ the game, ’cause this has been goin’ on for a minute.”

Also during the interview, J. Cole reveals that the solo feature on his latest LP, kiLL Edward, is him and described the phone call he had with Kanye West. Cole described his disappointment that ‘Ye made some of it public.

“I would’ve never posted that or tell him to post that,” Cole said. “That made me feel a certain type of way. I told him that. He apologized, for the record. I told him that it felt like you just used my name in that very quick conversation for social media and to keep your thing going, whatever you were doing. It just felt like it wasn’t sincere because of that.”
