Keyshia Cole: I'm Going Independent
Keyshia Cole is now an independent artist, the Bay Area native announced in an interview with Rap-Up. Cole was signed to Interscope Records but confirmed that she is no longer with the label.
“I’m ready to just be on a whole [other] plateau of recording... independent recording. So I’m just excited about that road,” Cole said. “I’m definitely going independent, 100 percent. I’ve been wanting to do it and I’m excited to see what happens at least."

Cole released her debut album, The Way It Is, via Interscope in 2005, and reportedly signed a 360 deal with the label. However, the 33-year-old singer says she was already steering the ship with the label, so going the independent route won't be a huge jump. “When I signed to Interscope everything was already, like, whatever I wanted to do. Nobody really told me what direction to go in, nobody said to be ‘this’ kind of person, I never was a packaged album, so I felt like from the beginning, this is all my ideas, it’s all who I am. I’m true to who I am so I want to control it. Why not?”
Meeting Prince helped Cole with her decision to go independent. He promised a collaboration once she severs label ties. “He was walking past and I was like, ‘Hey, how are you doin’? Can you do a song with me or nah?’ He said, 'Wait until you go independent ’cause you don’t wanna continue to be signed to a label, and I’ll definitely do a song with you.' So I’ve been waiting for this day.”
Music isn’t the only area where Cole is making a change. The mom of one was rumored to be involved with Birdman (she was arrested for allegedly attacking a woman at his house last year), but she’s now celibate. “I’ve been bumping heads with love a lot maybe it's not meant right now. I don't know. I need to regain some kind of spiritual and intellectual... you know. Yeah. It’s just not there right now and I don’t know why. It’s just awkward. Somebody said I’m in between stations. There’s a lot of static in my life. It is.”
