FYI: Apollo Theater Salutes Black History Month With Free Events
It’s Feb. 1, the beginning of Black History Month, and to help you salute the accomplishments of African-Americans across the nation, Harlem's famed Apollo Theater is hosting a collection of events this Friday and Saturday.
Who: Apollo Theater and Target Corporation
What: Open House Weekend at the Apollo Theater, featuring dance, music, film, tours, health screenings and family workshops
When: Saturday, Feb. 4 and Sunday, Feb. 5 from 12 — 5 p.m.
Where: 253 West 125th Street, New York, NY 10027
Some of the special events include:
Community Dance
A salute to the dance genres and greats that have graced the Apollo Theater’s stage with performances and dance lessons taught by Ballet Hispanico, Dance Theatre of Harlem and more organizations.
Family Dance Party
Dancer and choreographer Mickey Davidson leads family workshops in classic dances from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s such as the Lindy-Hop, Boogie Back, Twist, Cool Jerk and Hand Jive.
Community Jam
A celebration of music and instruments featuring Amateur Night contestants performing R&B, gospel, hip hop, Afro-Pop and the blues.
Family Instrument-Making Workshop
Musician Kevin Hylton and visual artist Miah teach participants how to create and decorate handmade instruments.
