Everything We Know About Kanye West’s ‘Jesus Is King’
With Kanye West’s ninth studio album, Jesus is King, set to release in two days, he brought his spiritual hymns and IMAX film to Los Angeles’ The Forum for a special preview on Wednesday (Oct. 23).
Kim Kardashian-West gave fans a taste on her Instagram story of the indoor field turned into an imaginative and utopian Meg Webster’s installation. The crowd cheered “Kanye! Kanye! Kanye!” as they got hyped and ready for the big reveal before the screen faded to black.
Beautiful harmonies were captured during the nearly 30-minute high-end fashion photographer Nick Knight directed film. Billboard reports that appearances of Ye’s choir were incorporated in the visual in addition to the captivating cinematography from gifted artist James Turrell’s installation in Arizona, the Roden Crater. An explicit-free setlist shared the gospel of West’s songs “Selah,” “Perfect Praise,” and “When I Think of His Goodness.” The entertainer opened up his discography pulling out his 808s & Heartbreak hits “Say You Will” and “Street Lights” in a revised faith-based rendition.
West raps and sings towards religion, the power in prayer, and the healing ability that Jesus has. Lyrics like “Sing till the Lord comes/Till the power of the Lord comes down,” to “God is king, we the soldiers,” and “Arguing with my dad, he said it ain’t Christlike…. Try to talk to my dad/He started spazzing/I started spazzing back,” were all featured in the IMAX mega film, according to Pitchfork.
West then joined his fans on The Forum floor to continue the special listening with “New Body” featuring the sounds of Ty Dolla $ign, “Use The Gospel” with the mash-up of Clipse and Kenny G and “Wraith talk into faith talk,” with Pusha T. Although not played in its entirety, fans got just enough and some, sweatshirts, T-shirts, long sleeves, and hats were offered to match the album’s blue vinyl and yellow scripted cover art.
Jesus is King will be available for a free screening at all US IMAX theatres starting Friday.
