In the midst of Kanye West’s Twitter tumult in April, when the Chicago rap icon stirred up trouble by way of pro-Donald Trump sentiment and shameful slavery commentary, several of his industry mates reached a hand out to, perhaps, talk some sense into Mr. West.

He also did his fair share of reaching out, such as to Roc Nation prodigy J. Cole. Yeezy even posted a screenshot of their phone conversation to prove it, but much to Cole’s discontent, which he revealed in his latest interview with Angie Martinez.

In the one-hour 30-minute long conversation, Cole discussed the ‘Ye controversy as it related to their conversation. He spoke no ill on Yeezy’s name, but did admit that posting the now-deleted tweet of that screenshot wasn’t OK with him.

“That made me feel a certain type of way,” he told Angie. “I told him that.”

The K.O.D. emcee added that Yeezy did apologize, though, as Cole expressed that he felt the GOOD Music leader used his name and their brief conversation solely for social media and to “keep [his] thing going, whatever [he was] doing,” Cole said. “It just felt like it wasn’t sincere because of that.”

Something good did come of their short phone call, however. The Fayetteville, North Carolina, rap icon also shared a request Yeezy had for him, essentially asking him to be his voice of reason and keep him in check. For Yeezy, having folks in his circle who aren’t the average yes-men would do him some good, especially after the inflammatory tweets that ignited backlash from fans and industry mates alike.

“I feel like he’s really good at sampling language that will resonate and it just so happened that this time he sampled the wrong shit,” Cole said of West’s controversies, specifically his Trump bromance. “When you come and you like, empower a demographic of people –their whole intent is to suppress people and oppress people, it’s like bro, I can’t rock with that.”

Spoken like a real one, Cole.
