Box Office: The Dark Knight Rises Soars to the Top

Ben Stiller's The Watch fails to find an audience.

The tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, didn't stop audiences from showing up to the theater for The Dark Knight Rises for the second weekend in a row.

The final installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy stayed at number one, despite competition from new releases Step Up Revolution and The Watch. TDKR earned an estimated $64.1 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $298.1 million. Last week, the Christian Bale-starred flick set the record for highest-grossing non-3D film in history, and third highest-grossing film overall.

The film's cast, including Anne Hathaway and Morgan Freeman, took a break from their promotional duties last week out of respect for the victims of the Colorado theater shooting, while Christian Bale paid a visit to the surviving victims and grieving town of Aurora.

Audiences did not rally around the weekend's new entries Step Up Revolution and The Watch, which both drastically underperformed. Revolution, the fourth installment of the Step Up franchise, which gave Channing Tatum his start, earned a mere $11.8 million to come in fourth place, while the star-powered The Watch (Jonah Hill and Vince Vaughn also star alongside Ben Stiller and newcomer Richard Ayoade) had a dim $13 million third place opening. Both films couldn't beat Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, which took second place.

Next week Total Recall enters the picture and will try to knock The Dark Knight Rises down to second (or third) place, but are audiences ready to move on from the caped crusader?
