Fans Defend Drake After Ebro Slams Rapper for Not Speaking on Black Issues

Supporters of the Canadian rap star quickly came back with receipts.

Ebro Darden feels Drake could speak up more when it comes to important issues regarding the Black community.

The Hot 97 radio show host and self-proclaimed “biggest Drake fan” appeared to call out the rapper during a recent episode of his Apple Music show “Rap Life Review.” During the episode, Ebro accused Drake of having “never shown up” for Black causes.

“And y’all know I’m the biggest Drake fan on this show,” Ebro said. He then added, “Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself.”

Ebro’s rant appeared to be triggered by Drake’s recent response to news that Childish Gambino’s critically acclaimed record “This Is America” initially started out as a diss track.

Earlier this month, Drake seemingly responded to Gambino during his Chicago stop on his It's All a Blur Tour. At one point during the show, a headline at the bottom of the stage read: "The overrated and over-awarded hit song, 'This Is America,' was originally a Drake diss record."

Ebro slammed Drake for addressing a project that never happened. “So now you have an issue — I get you have an issue with Childish Gambino… but fam, the song was supposed to be a joke diss, it didn’t actually happen. So why you in your feelings?” Ebro questioned.

Fans swiftly came to Drake's support, though. This included one Twitter user who shared a post by Ebro that acknowledged the rapper's statement addressing the 2016 police-involved shooting of Alton Sterling.

In his lengthy note, Drake shared, “I AM GRATEFUL TO BE ABLE TO CALL AMERICA MY SECOND HOME. LAST NIGHT WHEN I SAW THE VIDEO OF ALTON STERLING BEING KILLED IT LEFT ME FEELING DISHEARTENED, EMOTIONAL, AND TRULY SCARED. I WOKE UP THIS MORNING WITH A STRONG NEED TO SAY SOMETHING.”

He added, “IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BLACK AND BROWN COMMUNITIES AND LAW ENFORCEMENT REMAINS AS STRAINED AS IT WAS DECADES AGO. NO ONE BEGINS THEIR LIFE AS A HASHTAG. YET THE TREND OF BEING REDUCED TO ONE CONTINUES.”
