NAACP Image Awards: 5 Times BET Took Home The Win
Black Entertainment Television has long been the place for sources for news and the latest in the culture. Much like many before him, media entrepreneur Robert L. Johnson saw an opportunity to reach the Black audiences through cable television and in 1980 launched Black Entertainment Television.
Many of today’s most prominent artists and actors have made their television debut on the network and its impact has undoubtedly shifted and elevated Black culture. As we prepare for the 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards, here’s a look back at every time BET took home the win.
45th Annual NAACP Image Awards
Being Mary Jane won in "Outstanding Television Movie, Mini-Series, or Dramatic Special", with Gabrielle Union recognized as "Outstanding Actress". The Game's Brandy won "Outstanding Supporting Actress" in a Comedy Series and Wendy Raquel Robinson for "Best Supporting Actress".
41st NAACP Image Awards
The Inauguration of Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States won for “Outstanding News/Information Series or Special”.
The Michael Jackson Memorial: Celebrating the Life of Michael Jackson won for "Outstanding Variety Series or Special".
47th NAACP Image Awards
Being Mary Jane — won in the category of “Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series”.
The documentary Muhammad Ali: The People's Champ, also won for “Outstanding Documentary (TV)
BET original miniseries Book of Negroes took home the trophy for “Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture (TV)”

45th NAACP Image Awards
BET took home seven awards including one in the television category with Real Husbands of Hollywood winning for "Outstanding Comedy Series", with the show's lead actor Kevin Hart winning "Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series".
43rd NAACP Image Awards
Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil were honored for their writing, winning the "Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series" for the “Parachutes….Beach Chairs" episode of The Game. BET earned 15 nominations that year.
