Real Talk! Issa Rae On How She Conquered Her Fear Of Being Labeled A B**ch
Issa Rae may seem as though she has it all together while taking over HBO with her masterpiece of a show, Insecure, but the award-winning show creator wants you to know it’s not without coaching from Hollywood's most prominent Black women.
Earlier this month, Issa chatted it up with The Late Show host, Stephen Colbert, about season 3 of Insecure and managed to drop some serious jewels given to her by her role models Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Mara Brock Akil and Debbie Allen.
When asked by Stephen, "Now that you're an established, award-winning actor in your own right, do people come up asking for advice from you?"
The 33-year-old quickly responded yes, admitting there are times when she doesn’t always have the answers to their requests for advice.
She then went on to share where she’s insecure:
"I tend to be afraid of like upsetting people, and that will get you nowhere... Especially, when you are trying to create a show. As a showrunner and being in the industry, just as a woman, once you're labeled 'difficult.' Your career is kind of over because then it's like everyone is like, 'she's hard to work with, beware,' and you don't get many chances to fail."
When asked how she gets over this conundrum, especially as a Black woman, Issa shared the advice she received from the legends in the entertainment industry:
"The advice from them is: Don't be afraid to be a b*tch. And, it's so true!"
Well, there you have it, the answer to success from high-profile, successful Black women, and we actually get it!
Of course, that’s not to say you should be walking around being demanding and disrespectful, but if telling people what you really want gets you the label of a “b*tch,” then so be it.
Boss up, ladies!
TBH: We’re so over the stereotypes built to keep out #BlackGirlMagic dim.
