Eric Garner's Family Releases 'This Ends Today' Tribute Song
The family of Eric Garner has released the track “This Ends Today,” dedicated to the Staten Island father who died after being put in a chokehold by an NYPD officer last July. The cut takes its title from some of Garner’s last words during his exchange with cops before he was killed.
Garner’s voice opens the track, including the 43-year-old pleading “I can’t breathe” as he was being held down by officers. His daughter, Erica Garner, and family member Steven Flagg are featured on the song.
“This Ends Today” follows a long line of recent music inspired by the fatal stories of Garner, Mike Brown and other unarmed Black men who have been killed by police officers.
Garner’s death — and the non-indictment of the NYPD officer who put him in the fatal chokehold — was a boiling point in the fight against police brutality. The December court ruling brought about protests that continue all accross the country.
