Keyshia Cole Talks Relationship With Daniel 'Boobie' Gibson
Keyshia Cole didn't answer too many personal questions about her marriage during an interview with Power 105.1's the Breakfast Club, but the singer did admit to not being "genuinely happy," at the moment.
Cole stopped by the New York radio station Thursday (March 20), where she wouldn't publicly confirm that she split with NBA player Daniel "Boobie" Gibson out of respect for their son, DJ. Instead, she dropped a hint or two that the two are not a couple. "We co-parent," she said in response to a question about their status. "He's a great father. At 8:30 a.m. he comes and take DJ to school every morning, and I pick him up. We good."
The "Rick James" singer then hinted at a possible cause, when asked if she believed NBA players can be faithful. "I did," she said. "I really did, I believed in that. On top of that, we just had so much of a good relationship I felt like it wouldn't be possible."
As for a reconciliation, she refused to commit on air, stating, "I just rather avoid those kind of questions, for my son's sake."
To keep herself going, Cole leans on her adopted mother, Yvonne, and other family members for support, she said, adding that she is no longer in communication with her biological mother, Frankie Lons, and sister, Neffeteria Pugh, in order to keep her son away from the "chaos." Cole said her sister and mother don't even have her current phone number.
"It's a respect thing for one," explained Cole. "The last time I had my mom around, I sent her through rehab, and I tried to really help her. I spent a lot a of money, and I wasn't even out at the time. I wasn't doing shows or nothing like that, I was just making sure DJ was straight."
Another rocky moment for Cole, she noted, was dealing with the responses she received for negatively critiquing Beyoncé's "Bow Down." The comments came after Cole had been chastised already on social media over an off-the-cuff statement about Michelle Williams's 2013 Super Bowl guest spot.
From the general public to music colleagues like The-Dream, the singer said she felt "everybody" was going at her for being honest, but, "I love Beyoncé," she maintained, pointing out that the song in question was a "switch" from what fans are used to hearing from Bey, and calling The-Dream the "Hamburglar" for taking sides in their now old beef. "I just felt like everybody jumped on me because I'm from Oakland, I'm the ghetto chick, and I'm always starting stuff. In actuality, I'm just saying how I feel."
What she is happy about, however, is that she is back with manager Manny Hailey, and is working on new music. Her 2012 release, Woman to Woman, was her last on Interscope Records, she said. "I was talking to Baby from Cash Money for a little while about some things," Cole revealed of a possible new deal. "I don't know what's going to happen with that."
For now, Cole has released two new songs this week (in addition to "Rick James," she let loose "Next Time [Won't Give My Heart Away])" and teased a remake of the Notorious B.I.G. track "Mo Money Mo Problems" with Iggy Azalea a couple weeks ago.
