USA Track Star Torrin Lawrence Killed in Car Accident
Tragedy has struck the track and field world.
Team USA sprinter Torrin Lawrence died Monday after his car was struck by a tractor trailer in Georgia, officials confirmed to TMZ Sports among multiple reports. Lawrence was 25.
Lawrence’s vehicle reportedly blew out a tire on Georgia’s Interstate 75, leaving his car sitting in the middle lane of the three-lane highway. It was then that a tractor trailer hit Lawrence’s car, with the track star seated inside it, ejecting him from the vehicle and killing him at about 1:45 a.m.
Lawrence ran in the 4x400m relay at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas, this past May, winning a gold medal. He also finished ninth in the 400m at the U.S. Outdoor Championships on June 27.
USA track teammate Manteo Mitchell took to his Instagram account Monday to express shock, sorrow and condolences over the loss of his friend.
"Words cannot begin to express the sorrow I feel right now," Mitchell wrote alongside a picture he posted of himself seated next to Lawrence in the Bahamas. "Torrin was one of 'chillest' friends I've ever known. Dude always cracked jokes. I'm happy to know that we were good friends, competitors, and teammates. May you rest in complete peace. Let me know how that track feels up there. To the family: Please accept my deepest condolences for your family's loss. #FaithFocusFinish #4hunnidCrew”
