Protests continued in the north of Nigeria Tuesday as men and boys took to the streets to protest the outcome of the recent presidential election.

President Goodluck Jonathan won re-election with over 22 million votes. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who hails from the north, had 12.2 million votes.

In Kaduna, burned corpses with machete wounds lay in roads, writes the Associated Press. Muslim opposition supporters who were angered by the announcement that the Christian incumbent president had won the election.

The AP writes:

“On the outskirts of Kaduna, burned out minibuses and cars littered the highways, and at least six charred bodies could be seen. Skull caps and sandals were strewn nearby, left behind by those who frantically fled amid the chaos.

“Authorities and aid groups have hesitated to release tolls following the riots across northern Nigeria for fear of inciting reprisal attacks, but the National Emergency Management Agency confirmed there had been fatalities. The Nigerian Red Cross said Tuesday that nearly 400 people had been wounded.”

Though international observors have not presented any supporting proof, on Monday afternoon, Buhari’s camp added fuel protesters’ rage by alleging Jonathan’s People’s Democratic Party rigged votes in the southern part of the nation.

“We cannot accept these results as announced until cross-checks have been carried out by the electoral commission," a Buhari spokesman told Reuters. Voting in the nation has been plagued by vast allegations of fraud in the past, but African Union observers praised the recent election as being fair and credible.
