UConn Coach's Call to Mo'ne Davis Broke Recruiting Rule

NCAA flags Geno Auriemma for contacting little league star.

The NCAA determined Thursday that UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma committed a secondary rules violation by making a congratulatory phone call to pitching star Mo'ne Davis during her incredible run in the Little League World Series last month.

Auriemma called Davis, who plays both baseball and basketball, on the strength of her saying that her dream was to play for the UConn Huskies women's hoops team someday. However, the legendary women's basketball coach reportedly checked with the school's compliance department before making the phone call to the 13-year-old.

"The nature of coach Auriemma's two-minute conversation with Mo'ne had nothing to do with recruiting and instead had everything to do with congratulating and encouraging Mo'ne to continued success," Warde Manuel, UConn's athletic director, told ESPN.

Auriemma added: "There's guys playing college basketball driving around in cars that cost more than my house and we're worried about a phone call that I made?"

UConn isn't sure if the NCAA will impose any sanctions against Auriemma and/or the Huskies program.

In addition to Auriemma, Davis's memorable Little League World Series run caught the attention of Lil Wayne, Kevin Durant and baseball slugger Ryan Howard.
