Mattel to Create Bald Barbie for Children's Hospitals

Mattel will produce a bald Barbie doll to distribute to patients at children's hospitals who've lost their hair. The doll will be one of Barbie's friends and will come accessorized with wigs, scarves and hats that children can remove if they so choose.
The company's decision to create the bald doll came after photographer Jane Bingham co-created an online campaign and petition to promote their cause and find a way to help girls deal with their hair loss. They were then invited to the Mattel headquarters in February, where the company told them they would produce the bald dolls but would donate them directly to hospitals, patients and the National Alopecia Areata Foundation rather than sell them for profit, a move Bingham hopes will change in the future in order to reach other girls and women.
"[We want girls to know] they're not dependent on their hair for their self-worth and their beauty. Women and children, it's looked down upon that you would go out without your hair. People would automatically assume that you're sick and you should stay at home in bed," Bingham said. "We wanted to change this stigma especially for girls because they don't have many people to look up to."
