Are Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua becoming the new Scorcese and DiCaprio? The actor and director, who first collaborated on 2001's Training Day and reteamed for the upcoming film The Equalizer, will go for a hat trick with a remake of The Magnificent Seven.
Fuqua confirmed that he'll be working with Washington on the remake of John Sturges's classic Western (itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai) at the Toronto International Film Festival. What's more, the director added that his version will take place during the Civil War. Given Fuqua's penchant for stylized action films, could this mean a Django Unchained-type film with Washington in the lead? We'll have to wait and see.
Meanwhile, gorgeous British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw continues her invasion of Hollywood. The Belle star has signed on to join Will Smith in director Ridley Scott's untitled NFL concussion drama. The whistleblower tale will be based on the GQ article "Game Brain," which follows Dr. Bennet Omalu, the forensic neuropathologist who single-handedly made the first discovery of CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in a pro football player, raising public awareness for the degenerative disease. 
The article, and presumably the film, takes a close look at the price paid by professional athletes in impact sports, and the political, cultural and corporate interests that fuel the business of professional sports. The topic is all-too-relevant today given the Ray Rice scandal that has rocked professional football.
