Exclusive Q&A: Miguel
We recently caught up with singer/producer Miguel. The budding superstar, fresh off the "OMG Tour" with Usher, can best be described as an eclectic mix of Lenny Kravitz meets Maxwell, with a dash of Pharrell. The Grammy nominated singer delivers a combo of hip-hop, funk, electro and classic rock on his debut single, "All I want I You, ft. J.Cole," which hit #1 on the Billboard US Heatseekers charts.
BET.com: How do you feel after finishing two major tours with superstar headliners?
Miguel: Coming off Mary J. Blige was a huge learning experience. With Usher it was a lot more women. It was more of learning how to deal with all the circumstances that go with touring. It made us so much tighter as a band. I also got to meet a lot of fans, take a lot of pictures.
Do you have your own tour in the works?
Yes, it's going to be special. All venues are hand-picked. My band and I are touching all the major cities. It's really for the fans, and it's about giving them a full picture. I'm really, really excited and focused on making this tour incredible for them.
Where did you grow up? And how did you get started in this business?
"I'm from San Pedro, California and I was signed to a production company at 13. It's been 10 years. I've been in every major executive's office, so I've worked hard to get here."
Your mother is African- American and your father is Mexican. Do you speak Spanish?
I speak a little Spanish. I do I need to practice, though.
What's next for you?
I premiered my second single video on Tuesday January 18th on 106 & Park. It's called "Sure Thing," which got me signed. I put the song on MySpace two years ago and it blew up. It's exciting for [fans] to finally have a visual.
