Venus Williams Dominates in Opening Round of Wimbledon

After recently returning from a five-month layoff due to injury, Venus Williams dominates opponent 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round.

We’re still not sure how healthy Venus Williams is following a five-month injury layoff, but the five-time Wimbledon champ looked right at home on the grass at center court during Monday’s opening round.

Williams dominated 97th-ranked Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round of Wimbledon. In doing so, Williams seemed even more powerful than she was a few days ago in her return to competition at the Eastbourne.

“It’s always great to be back,” Williams said in an Associated Press story. “To play a few matches at Eastbourne helped me feel pretty comfortable here. All in all, I’m pretty pleased. I only see pluses for today. I missed being out here playing.”

For what it’s worth, it seemed like old times as Williams made a fashion statement with a form-fitting one-piece outfit while she also dominated her opponent on the grass. It took Williams just 59 minutes to dispatch of Amanmuradova.

Williams is attempting to come back following a hip injury during the Australian Open. She dropped to No. 30 in the world, but she is seeded No.23 for Wimbledon.

Williams will face Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan in Tuesday’s second round.
