Sherri Shepherd Talks Perimenopause, Chin Hairs, and Losing Teeth

The talk show host jokes that she’ll be “nothing but gums” after menopause.

With celebrities like Halle Berry and Oprah Winfrey being outspoken about experiencing perimenopause, Sherri Shepherd is sharing her perspective.

Preceding menopause, perimenopause signals when hormones begin to decline, while hot flashes and irregular menstrual cycles occur in women around their mid-40s. At 57 years old, Shepherd found it opportune to tackle “the menopause before the menopause” on the Thursday, March 27 episode of her talk show, “Sherri.” Shepherd previously explored the natural decline of reproductive hormones in a 2024 episode.

“My anatomy is still playing tricks on me. Like, every time I go to the doctor, and I think we've got it figured out, something else comes up,” the television personality said about her health, according to People.

The “something else” was hot flashes, to which a doctor confirmed the “shocking news” of Shepherd being in perimenopause.

“Sherri” executive producer Jawn Murray, joked that the condition is generally when women “get a little mean,” and brought up her mother. “We take a lot of umbrage when you say we 'get mean,' Shepherd replied. “It's just our hormones are changing and things... It's estrogen, it's testosterone. And we're trying to figure out where we fit in this new body.”

Shepherd also detailed physical changes that she’s been having as a result of perimenopause, like “chin hairs,” joking that she’s “gonna look like Sasquatch from the chin up” upon having menopause.

Shepherd also surprised the audience by revealing that she had lost a tooth, or her “Queen Latootha,” adding that she’ll be “nothing but gums” when “menopause gets here.” According to the National Library of Medicine, edentulism is caused by a loss of bone density from a drop in oestrogen. The risk of gum disease is also higher during perimenopause.

However, since Shepherd is menstruating, the talk show host can “still get pregnant.” “I don't know what this is,” she said. “I [have to] hurry up and get to post-menopause because I'm heated and defeated.”

If she hasn’t already, Shepherd could join Berry’s Respin online community to prepare for menopause with other women in her situation.
