What's At Stake: Co-Director of Unheard Speaks on Exposing #SAE

Unheard, a Black student alliance on the campus of the University of Oklahoma, is the group that exposed Sigma Alpha Epsilon's n-word chant video. Chelsea Davis, co-director of Unheard, told What’s At Stake that the group released the video to raise awareness of the racist culture people are still participating in.

Tensions are high on the campus of University of Oklahoma following the release of a controversial video showing the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chanting the n-word. The clip has been seen all over the Internet and has outraged many.

Unheard, a Black student alliance on the campus of University of Oklahoma, exposed the fraternity. Chelsea Davis, co-director of Unheard, told What’s At Stake that the group released the video to raise awareness of the racist culture people are still participating in.

“Even 50 years after Selma, people are still thinking these ideals and using this language,” Davis explained.

Davis said Unheard has been receiving much support from fellow student organizations and President David L. Boren, who called SAE’s actions “disgraceful.” Two students have been expelled and dissenters have organized protests against the fraternity.

But there are still those who are against Unheard and believe the organization is taking action for the fame and video cameras. Davis said there is a bigger issue at hand.

“It’s more than SAE. It’s so much bigger than that,” Davis said. “It’s not only a problem at the University of Oklahoma. This is a nationwide problem.”

Watch the full video above for What’s At Stake Starr Nathan's full conversation with Davis on these critical issues. They speak further on what it feels like to be a Black student at the University of Oklahoma, whether rap music should be brought into this conversation and what changes are necessary for the campus to move forward after this controversial incident.
