Cam Newton Excluded From NFL Tribute To Black QBs, Twitter Reacts
As Black History Month kicks off its first week, the National Football League is not off to a great start, according to Cam Newton supporters.
On Friday (Feb. 3), the NFL posted a graphic to honor Black quarterbacks. Next Sunday (Feb. 12), will mark the first time in Super Bowl history that two Black quarterbacks will headline the game: Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs) and Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles).
Marlin Briscoe (the first Black quarterback in the AFL), Eagles great Donovan Mcnabb, former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, trailblazer Warren Moon, Doug Williams, Mahomes and Hurts are featured on the tribute graphic.
“Honor the past, work hard in the present, and leave a legacy for the future,” reads the tweet from the official NFL account.
The comments section of the Twitter post is flooded with users questioning how Newton, a standout quarterback for the Carolina Panthers for the majority of his 11-year career, wasn’t featured in the tribute.
“Cam Newton not being in this picture is disgusting,” one user said.
Another user called Newton a “cultural icon” and said to “never leave him out again.”
