Breakdacinging To Debut As An Olympic Sport In 2024 Paris Games

The International Olympic Committee hopes the move will attract a younger audience.

Breakdancing is officially becoming an Olympic sport.

ESPN reports that on Monday (December 7), the International Olympic Committee has added street dance battles to the medal events program for the 2024 Paris Games. The move was made, in part, to attract a younger viewers.

Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing were also confirmed by the board as medal events at the Paris Games.

“It should’ve been in there from day one of the Olympics,” DJ Qbert, one of Rock Steady’s first DJs, told HipHopDX after the announcement was made. “People are starting to figure out Hip Hop culture’s breaking has way more flavor in body language than what the Olympics had to offer previously.”

Breaking has come a long way since its beginning in the Bronx during the early 1970s. It was particularly popular among Black and Puerto Rican communities.
