Lil Nas X Says He’s ‘Too Busy’ For A Boyfriend
Although 2019 introduced us to a bevy of rising rap stars, only few can say that they’ve had a year quite as transformative as Lil Nas X.
A little over a year ago, Lil Nas (born Montero Lamar Hill) was living with his sister as he ruminated over which direction to take his life following his decision to drop out of college. By 2019, the 20-year-old Atlanta rapper had the biggest song in the country following the record-breaking ascent of his smash country-trap hybrid single, “Old Town Road,” which later became the lead single of his EP, 7. It also garnered him six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.
Ahead of the 62nd annual Grammys Awards, the 20-year-old country trap sensation spoke to Variety where he reflected over the highs and lows of his unceremonious foray into the music industry. Most notably, Lil Nas made the brave decision to publicly come out during Pride Month last year. Speaking to Variety’s James Patrick Herman, Lil Nas isn’t deterred by his detractors: “I hope my actions are enough to inspire other young LGBTQ children coming up to not be afraid to be themselves.”
Additionally, he admits he does “feel pressure to be a role model for the community.”
However, Lil Nas is also not ready to bring someone home just yet. In regards to his relationship with his father, the 20-year-old says his sexuality initially came as “a shock.”
“We have become closer,” he told the publication. “I mean, especially now because I don’t have anything to hide. It was a shock for him. It’s still the beginning phase. I’m not comfortable bringing a guy around yet.”
It will likely be some time before Lil Nas seriously considers dating, anyways, especially after sharing that the current break-neck pace of career keeps him “too busy.”
“I have met a lot of great people this year,” he said. “Relationships are hard because either I end up being too busy or I end up falling for another person,” although admittedly he falls “super-easily.”

Further into the interview, Lil Nas touched on some of his darker moments, too, such as trying to get his estranged mother into rehab; he said he “doesn’t have the closest relationship” with her.
“Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love,” he said.
