Lupita Nyong'o is a bold sensation as New York magazine's cover girl for its Spring Fashion issue. The publication nailed it by nabbing Hollywood and fashion's latest It girl for the issue. In the Erik Madigan Heck-shot photo, the 12 Years a Slave star poses in a red-and-white dress that blends in beautifully with a similarly printed background.
In her interview, Nyong'o talked about growing up in a very structured home and how attending college in America really shook her up.
"I thrive on structure. I find my freedom in structure," she said. "It was very hard to adjust to an individualistic and very liberal system. I mean, my upbringing, I would iron my clothes every night. I would plan what I wore the night before, and then I would iron it. That's just the way my mom raised us. Then I got to Hampshire, where clothing is sometimes optional and all this kind of thing. I was mortified."
She also shared her first role in her school's presentation of Oliver Twist and it turns out she was pushing the envelope from the start.
"I was a passerby. I had five words: 'Coming down the street, there.' That was it. But I had a backstory for my character. I decided I was going to be a man, so I borrowed my brother's suit, my dad's briefcase. I don't know why I decided to be a man — I think it was more interesting," she said.
