Box Office: The Dark Knight Rises Trumps Total Recall
Everything that rises doesn't necessarily fall.
For the third straight weekend The Dark Knight Rises topped the box office beating out new entry Total Recall by more than $10 million. The final film of the Batman trilogy earned $36.4 million in ticket sales compared to Total Recall's second place $26 million. TDKR's domestic total comes to $354.6, which is still slightly behind The Dark Knight's performance.
Fox's kid-friendly pic Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days came in third place. Followed by Ice Age: Continental Drift and The Watch.
Ticket sales dropped 25 percent this weekend compared to the same weekend last year due largely to the Summer Olympics and residual fallout from the Aurora, Colorado, shootings.
Next week, Batman will face his first real competition from The Bourne Legacy as well as Will Ferrell's political comedy, The Campaign.
