Is the prospect of a Miles Davis biopic finally getting some, well, mileage? The Hollywood Reporter announces that Notorious director George Tillman Jr. is developing a feature film about the jazz great. The project will compete with Oscar-nominee Don Cheadle's own plans to make a Davis biopic, which the actor has been trying for years to get off the ground.

Both projects have the blessing of one of Davis's children — Tillman Jr. is working with the musician's eldest son, Gregory Davis, and will be loosely based on Gregory's book Dark Magus: the Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis. Cheadle's project, which he plans to direct, produce and star in, has the blessing of younger son Erin Davis. The actor has also tapped Herbie Hancock to score his film.

Currently neither project is backed by a major studio, so the race to the big screen seems up-for-grabs. Before news of a second Davis biopic hit, however, Cheadle was content to take his time developing his version. “Now is a good time, 10 years ago would have been a good time and 10 years from now it will still be a good time to see a dynamic, entertaining movie that’s wall-to-wall Miles Davis where the music will hopefully spark some desire to know more about the man," the actor told The Hollywood Reporter last year. 

Let's see if he feels the same now that he's got some competition.
