Here’s How to Support Displaced Black Families In Altadena
Among multiple wildfires in the Los Angeles area since last Tuesday, January 7, the Eaton Fire devastated Altadena, one of the city’s historic Black areas.
By Sunday morning, January 12, the Eaton Fire reached 27 percent containment, although 1,213 structures had been decimated and 180 damaged. As a means of survival, some displaced Black families, formerly of Altadena, have resorted to the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe to rebuild through financial support as the fires continue to ravage L.A.
Over the weekend, a Google spreadsheet began to circulate with a list of over 350 Black families using GoFundMe with information regarding their location, some residing in the also-affected Pasadena and Pacific Palisades, along with their current GFM amount raised and end goal.
One of the most notable individuals who boosted the compiled spreadsheet on social media was musician, spoken word poet, and actor Saul Williams, who shared a Spotfund link for Altadena resident Minnie Robinson, also known as Nana, to her family members. In a reposted video recorded by Robinson’s daughter, Kerres Madlock, Robinson expressed gratitude for the ability to rebuild her home. At the same time, the scene around her showed her destroyed residence tragically burned with an exposed interior.
Along with houses, Black-owned businesses were destroyed when the Eaton Fire struck close to Altadena, impacting the area once known as the home to restaurant Burgers for Life, Little Red Hen Coffee Shop, and more.
The total of people who have died from the Eaton Fire is eight, while five firefighters have been injured. The Eaton Fire, separate from the Kenneth Fire, Palisades Fire, and Hurst Fire, started near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive and exploded overnight due to the heavy Santa Ana winds of up to 100 mph.
