DJ Mustard on Filming ‘Not Like Us,’ Says He Wasn’t Trolling Drake During ‘Pop Out’ Performance
DJ Mustard recently stopped by the Big Boy’s Neighborhood radio show to chat about filming the music video for Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” record over the weekend.
The “Ballin” musician talked about collaborating with Lamar and revealed that production on the visual took place during the early morning hours, but it wasn’t long before “the streets were packed.”
Host Big Boy drew a powerful comparison, likening the moment to Dr. Dre and 2Pac’s early West Coast reign, underscoring the project's historical significance.
Mustard mentioned that he and Lamar had a similar conversation, noting that “this feels like how it felt when California Love [released].” He also shared that the “Euphoria” emcee was on set during the Hype Williams-directed music video in November 1995.
“Kendrick said, ‘I seen that video.’ He was like, ‘I was on my dad’s shoulders.’ And I was like ‘Really?’ He was like ‘Yeah.’ And then we seen a little boy—the same way—and I was like that’s the same thing,” he shared.
Mustard also addressed claims that he was trolling Drake with his Toronto Blue Jays hat during his performance at Lamar’s Juneteenth “Pop Out + Ken and Friends” concert.
“I bought a lot of hats that I like and I put ‘faith of mustard seed’ on all of them,” he explained. I sweated out two of my hats at “Pop Out,” and that was the last hat I had with ‘faith of mustard seed’ on it. It just happened to be a Toronto Blue Jays. I grew up in ‘the jungles,’ we all wore that hat.”
