The American Girl brand, famed for its historically based dolls and books, announced the arrival of Melody, a spirited 9-year-old girl living in Detroit during the civil rights era. Melody is the third African-American doll in the brand’s collection after Addy, whose family escapes from slavery during the Civil War, and Cecile, who lives in 19th-century New Orleans. (She was discontinued in 2014.)

The dolls are priced anywhere from $115-$120 each, and you can also buy their corresponding books, clothes, furniture and other accessories separately. As Melody loves to sing, her set includes a recording studio that plays Motown music. Basically, we’re swooning hard over here!

Hitting retail this summer, the Melody doll was created to celebrated the brand’s 30th anniversary. The toymaker said it consulted with historians and civil rights activists, including the late Julian Bond, to ensure the accuracy of her design and story, according to an interview with CBS This Morning. With the Black Lives Matter movement in full swing, it seems like the perfect time to introduce a doll whose story centers on one of the most important periods in American history, sharing it with a whole new generation of girls.
