Howard University Students Volunteering At Philadelphia Public Schools For Spring Break

They encourage children to attend college and more.

Two dozen students from Howard University are using the time off during spring break to volunteer at Philadelphia public schools.

According to WPVI-TV, the students are part of the HBCU’s Alternative Spring Break program, which launched in 1994. The students hand out free breakfast sandwiches and encourage kids to attend college.

Volunteer Chantel Williams said, “We're here at elementary, middle, and high schools just to encourage and motivate them to go to college, especially HBCUs.”

She also added, “We chose Philadelphia as a site because of the education issues.”

Gompers Elementary Community School Principal Phillip DeLuca told WPVI-TV, "The fact that they sacrificed their spring break, it really speaks to the importance of lifting as you climb.”

Alternative Spring Break programs are being offered at schools across the country.
