Prince Pays It Forward

The recording artist donates $250K to education charity in South Carolina.

Superstar Prince has handed out a $250,000 donation to a nonprofit group that aims to make sure all children in a Columbia, S.C., neighborhood graduate from college. Prince’s drummer, Columbia native John Blackwell Jr., granted the check to the city’s Eau Claire Promise Zone, a 12-neighborhood area that takes part in the nationwide Promise Neighborhoods movement, whose vision is to prepare children to attain an excellent education and successfully transition to college and career.

This is not the first program to receive a hefty contribution from the Purple One. According to the organization’s Web site, Prince has already donated $1 million to the Harlem Children’s Zone Project, a program that serves as the inspiration behind the continued success of the Promise Neighborhoods initiative, and $250,000 to the Uptown Dance Academy and American Ballet Theatre.
