#TonysSoNotWhite: The Tonys Are Clearly Better at Diversity Than the Oscars

Check out this year's nominees.

Like television, Broadway has been really upping its game in terms of adding some diversity to what, and who, we see on the Great White Way. Now, the influx of new talent and people of color to show business is being reflected in the Tony nominations.
The nominees for this year's Tony Awards were announced early Tuesday morning, with Hamilton and Shuffle Along sweeping most categories, and Eclipsed and The Color Purple scoring multiple nominations each.

Hamilton, the groundbreaking hip-hop musical about the nation’s founding fathers, has been nominated for 16 Tony Awards, the most in Broadway history. The show, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, has the rare distinction of crossing over into pop culture and bringing new generations of theater-goers to Broadway. Hamilton not only earned a nod in virtually every category, but in some of the acting categories, cast members will face off against each other.
1920s revival Shuffle Along was the second-most nominated show, earning nods for Best Musical, Best Choreography and many others. Danai Gurira's moving play, Eclipsed, starring Lupita Nyong'o, was also nominated for Best Play, Best Leading Actress in a Play (Nyong'o) and four other awards. The Color Purple was also recognized for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Leading Actress (Cynthia Erivo) and more.
