‘He Slapped All Of Us’: Chris Rock’s Mom Speaks Out About Will Smith’s Infamous Oscars Meltdown
Chris Rock’s mom, Rose Rock, has broken her silence on the infamous Oscars slap from Will Smith to her son.
In an interview with WIS-TV, the author and motivational speaker shared her reaction to the altercation and how it affected her, stating, “When he slapped Chris, he slapped all of us. He really slapped me, because when you hurt my child, you hurt me.”
Rose mentioned that this was the one time she watched the award show from home and initially thought the incident was staged, especially once Smith returned to his seat and yelled, “keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth.”
She continued by saying that Smith reacted to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s “giving you the side-eye, and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened.”
The Oscars slap went down on March 27. Comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada’s bald head, which triggered Will to approach Rock on stage and slap him across the face.
Pinkett Smith revealed in 2018 that she was struggling with hair loss due to alopecia.
Later during the award show, Smith won the award for Best Actor for the movie King Richard.
“No one heard his speech,” Rose Rock said. “No one was able to just be in the moment because everyone was sitting there like, ‘what just happened?”
Ultimately, Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and has been banned for ten years for all Academy-related events.
Rose called Smith’s social media apology disingenuous, noting that Smith’s “people wrote up a piece and said, ‘I apologize to Chris Rock,’ but something like that is personal. You reach out.”
