Beverly Johnson to Star in Reality Show for OWN
Beverly Johnson turned heads in 1974 when she became the first Black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue. Now the 59-year-old fashion icon is letting audiences into her life with a new reality show on the Oprah Winfrey Network called Beverly's Full House that's set to launch in February 2012.
According to the show's press release, Johnson tries to improve her relationships with her daughter and son-in-law and while at times her actions bring success, sometimes her intentions are misunderstood. She and her daughter will work with a life coach as Johnson struggles with correcting past mistakes.
"I'm so excited about this opportunity," Johnson tells the Huffington Post BlackVoices. "The show is an amazing look into the complexities of a mother and daughter relationship and our loves."
The show takes place in Johnson's home in Palm Springs, California, where she lives with her house manager, her New York City-based investment banker boyfriend, as well as her daughter, Anansa Sims Patterson, son-in-law, and granddaughter, Ava. Patterson moved into Johnson's house to save money to buy a home someday.
"Being able to spend this time with Ava is such a joy for me. It's great to hear my daughter say 'now I understand what it was like for you,'" Johnson says. "I thought I knew everything about her and myself, but I quickly learned that I don't. It's a very interesting process. It's a very humbling process."
