Students at Hinds County Community College are protesting the arrest of fellow student Akinola Gonzalez, who failed to show his ID to campus police. He was booked and charged with a misdemeanor for failing to obey police in the Hinds County detention center on Sept. 2. He was released on bail by the next day, according to The Clarion-Ledger. 
The 21-year-old junior engineering student believes he was being unfairly targeted by police, whom Gonzalez said were rude and used profanity during their encounter. After being approached by campus police, Gonzalez said he asked the officer why he needed to present his ID. Gonzalez said he was wearing his ID around his neck the entire time, but refused to present it after he was not given answers.

His friend thought at first that Gonzalez was being targeted for his clothing and advised him to pull his pants up, an action that does violate school policy dress code. Protests against Gonzalez's arrest state that he was taken to jail because his pants were sagging. But that was not the cause of the arrest, according to campus officials. 
“We would never arrest a student for a dress code violation. Whether or not they agree with an officer, there is a process,” Campus Dean Tyrone Jackson said to WJTV12.
The community college has decided not to take disciplinary action against Gonzalez but he still faces charges brought by the county police.
