ASCAP Black History Month R&B Performances: Sha'Leah Nikole Performs ‘Strange Fruit’
As Black History Month continues its strong start, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is stepping in to celebrate the momentous month.
On Monday (February 20), ASCAP’s campaign sheds a light on rising R&B artist Sha’Leah Nikole, who took her opportunity in the spotlight to sing a cover of Billie Holiday’s "Strange Fruit."

“Black History Month is important to me because we get to intentionally acknowledge and celebrate all those who came before us, who helped pave the way for us to experience some of the amazing opportunities that we have today,” Nikole says. “When I think of the song ‘Strange Fruit’, I think of paying tribute to all of our brothers and sisters who we lost in brutal killings and lynchings – even in 2023 with the modern-day lynchings of mass-incarceration and police brutality. It’s an honor for me to be able to sing this song and pay tribute to all the lives that have been lost.”
Next week, ASCAP’s BHM campaign will continue with another artist. Stay tuned for that!
