Solange Joins The #TakeAKnee Movement During Her Latest Performance
If you’ve been to just about any festival or concert this summer, you’ve seen the magic that happens when Solange takes the stage. But instead of her usual performance art pieces, the singer decided to switch things up a bit at The Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 24. Solange took a knee during her performance in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and other protesters against racism and police brutality.
In a fan video captured during the show, Solange is seen bouncing around as she sings “Don’t Touch My Hair,” a track from her Grammy Award-winning album A Seat at the Table. As she finished the number, she stood up before slowly kneeling. And while the crowd clapped and cheered her own, she sat there and then rose to her feet once again.
After that display of activism, Solange joins a number of celebrities who have also made the same gesture. Following Trump’s scathing commentary about Steph Curry and Colin Kaepernick, singer Stevie Wonder got down on both knees during his performance at the Global Citizen concert. Additionally, Pharrell Williams knelt at the Charlottesville benefit show in protest of racism.
It’s been a little over a year since Colin Kaepernick first opted for a peaceful protest during the national anthem. Since then, his actions have inspired a number of musicians and athletes to follow suit. Check out the video of Solange below.
