This Is How to Cop Kim, Ciara, and La La's Met Gala Hair at Home

Their hairstylist Cesar Ramirez tells us everything.

The Met Gala, a.k.a. the "Fashion Oscars," is over, and today is all about the post-game analysis. There were tons of stunning looks on the red carpet last night, and everybody clearly put a lot of thought into their wardrobe and hair to fit the theme of "Manus x Machina" (man and machine).
We got an inside look at how Jennifer Hudson, LaLa Anthony, Ciara and Kim Kardashian created their 'dos with Mizani Global Artist Director Cesar Ramirez, who crafted the stunning styles. Ramirez was kind enough to share the details with us — tips included! Read on, and yes, you can try this at home.

For Kim, Ramirez explained, "The Balmain dress was so major on its own we opted to keep her hair sexy and fresh. I just wanted the hair to look wet and completely undone. The look may be very simple, but it actually takes a lot of steps to achieve. I even had to flex my colorist skills since I had to bleach and dye Kim's brows."
Here's how he made it happen:
"On freshly washed hair I began prepping with Mizani 25 Miracle Milk; its extremely moisturizing and will protect the hair from every other layer of product. Next, I parted out an inch around her hair line and using Mizani Edge Taming Gel, I brushed [the] hair while pinning everything back. I sprayed the hair from roots to ends with Mizani HRM to hold in place. Then, I brushed the hairline I initially left out to cover the rest of the hair and hide my pins. I then used my blow dryer on a low setting to heat and set everything in place. To finish, I sprayed with Mizani Hi-Def Shyne Spray giving everything a super-shiny, wet look."

From the moment she stepped out of her limo, nobody has been able to stop talking about Ciara's bold hair. In creating the futuristic, metallic look, Ramirez said, "I really wanted to play up the futuristic theme of “Manus x Machina," adding, "Met Ball is a time to really push limits, and I usually begin conceptualizing as soon as the theme is released."
Here's how he did it — in just a couple of hours!
"To achieve this look, I prepped with Mizani True Textures Style Refresher MilkI then dried the hair, iron curled and set her hair in pin clips. I allowed my set to cool before removing my clips and brushing everything with Mizani HRM Spray to begin my dry finger wave. I sculpted each wave into a classic shape and secured with multiple silver Bobby pins. For the back section, I took each set curl and used a silver bobby to hold. [This was] inspired by a retro pin curl set, [but] with futuristic arrangement finish."

Hudson stunned in an all-white gown, and Ramirez had to find a style that fit with the look without competing. "For Jennifer's look... I wanted to really let her H&M fantasy, whimsical dress be the star of the ball." He had previously cut J-Hud's locks into a sharp crop, so to punch it up he "went with a sleek and textured one-length bob," he said.
This look, he said, took an hour to put together, start to finish:
"To achieve the look, I clipped in pieces of Indique Pure Straight hair and prepped with the Mizani Thermasmooth System, which helped to achieve a smooth sleek look while heat protecting. Once dried and flat ironed I went in and texturized with a razor to create an edgier feel. To really bring out the texture, I ran a dime-size of Mizani Edge Taming Gel, reducing weight on her sides while pumping up volume on top. Making sure the ends were very piece-y, I finished with Mizani HRM Spray for hold. The completed look took about an hour.

Finally, Anthony wore a sleek, fiery gown, and Ramirez wanted to complement that. "At La La's fitting, I studied the lines and shapes that her dress formed. I knew a sleek ponytail would be best, but, of course, we had to add a unique #CesarDo twist," he recounts. "I imagined 5th Element meets modern-day glamour, with silver as our accent color. Her dress was so decadent that I didn't want to take away from the structure, so I decided to 'snatch' her hair up and away from the face."
Here's the step-by-step guide:
"To start, on clean hair, I smooth everything using my Mizani Thermasmooth System and One Styling Tools Flat Iron with infrared technology to repair hair as you style. Once all smoothed, I section about an inch wide above each ear to the back of her head and braided to add texture and a foundation for our bands and silver leafing. Next, I teased the roots at the crown to create volume. I added hair to her ponytail using two inches of Pure Wavy hair from Indique. This added the drama to her look. I wrapped the base of the ponytail in silver wiring. Finally, I attached hooked elastics from braid to braid to create a rippled texture to the top of the pony. All of this took me about an hour and a half. These are some great ways to innovate a ponytail."

La La said of the hair, "I absolutely love my hair because Cesar included the tech theme with the foil and the wiring, while still allowing me to feel glamorous and beautiful.”

So, there you have it! Easy-ish steps to achieve some of the best looks from this year's Met Gala. Now all you have to do is get your hands on a one-of-a-kind gown, and you'll be doing it like the stars do.
