[Video] Monty Williams Has Words for Driver Who Killed His Wife
Monty Williams is one strong man.
Just over a week since losing his wife to injuries from a car accident, the Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach found it in his heart to ask for well wishes for the family of the other driver involved, too.
Both his wife, Ingrid, and the driver who struck her in a head-on collision on February 9 were killed in the tragic accident.
"I want to close with this, and I think it’s the most important thing we need to understand. Everyone is praying for me and my family, which is right, but let us not forget that there were two people in this situation," Williams solemnly said during his wife's funeral service Thursday night, as reported by USA Today Sports. "And that family needs prayer as well, and we have no ill will towards that family. In my house, we have a sign that says, ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’"
He added: "We cannot serve the Lord if we don’t have a heart of forgiveness. That family didn’t wake up wanting to hurt my wife. Life is hard. It is very hard, and that was tough, but we hold no ill will."
Among the attendees who heard Williams's powerful words were the entire Thunder organization, coach Gregg Popovich, Tim Duncan and David West of the San Antonio Spurs and Doc Rivers, Chris Paul and Austin Rivers of the Los Angeles Clippers.
You can watch Williams deliver the speech below.
Ingrid Williams was 44 years old. Three of their five children were injured in the accident and two remain hospitalized, but are expected to be OK, according to the Oklahoman.
The newspaper adds that Susannah Donaldson, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The courage and strength that Monty spoke with Thursday night reverberated throughout the entire league.
Prayers up for the Williams family.
