As a Canadian teen television star, famed rap artist, top-tier Young Money signee, OVO Sound label leader and all-around global megastar,  it’s only imaginable how beefed up Drake’s network of a security team must be.

As tactical as they must be, they apparently need some training in Celebs 101 as well after their unfamiliarity with 19-year-old Canadian pop singer Shawn Mendes, who claims he got snatched up by Drizzy’s guards for simply walking over for a quick “hello.”

In his recollection of the incident, Mendes shared with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that the awkward encounter happened during a Toronto concert from one of OVO’s lead singing talents, The Weeknd. The Canadian crooner said that he spotted Drizzy, among other artists, and figured it’d be polite to greet him, especially considering that the two had met on a couple of occasions before. Little did Mendes know, that wasn’t the best idea, and the More Life emcee’s security team promptly reminded him of it.

“I go over and I see him. He’s a huge guy, right? So you don’t just go over to him — I guess not," Mendes explained. "So I go over to touch his side. His 6-foot-6, 300-pound security guard [*reenacts the guard locking Mendes’ arm behind his back*], next thing I know I’m in the middle of The Weeknd show with my arm hooked behind my back! Drake’s security guard just has me just completely at his mercy.”

Mendes continues explaining that he immediately looks over at Drizzy. The look in his eyes, which Mendes hilariously described as a “Help me, please, Drake!” glance, must have propelled Drizzy to intervene with the potentially disastrous encounter. That is, after he made sense of who the kid was that his security team was manhandling.

“I saw [Drake] put the things together in his mind, and he realized it was me, and he comes over and grabs the guard,” Mended continued, “and he’s like, ‘Don’t do that! You don’t know who that is!’ and I’m just like… I was terrified.”

Thankfully, Mendes recounted the story with all smiles and is able to look back on the exchange and laugh about it now. Besides, he said, the security guard was only doing his job, and his moral of the story was, “don’t expect everyone to know who you are.”

Someone should still probably send a few “Who’s Who of Hollywood” books over for his security team to carry around from here on out.
