Jordin Sparks Shares Lessons Learned From Jason Derulo Breakup

The singer says Derulo never bothered speaking to her again.

When we first learned that Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo had broken up last fall, we were shocked and saddened by the news. What on earth happened between the two musical lovebirds that caused them to call it quits after three years together? Well, during a recent appearance on Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, Sparks opened up about what happened between the pair and while we know there are two sides to every story, if her account is true, then Derulo is quite the jerk for pulling this stunt on her.

Sparks said the two had an argument and managed to patch things up — or so she thought — before she was set to fly out for work. They kissed each other goodbye, he said he loved her…and then he never spoke to her again! In five months, Sparks said that two haven’t spoken a word and he’s only sent word for his things through another person.

Sounds incredibly rough, and Sparks admits she got through the breakup with lots of crying and listening to Drake songs. Now, the singer is stronger and clear-headed with a better sense of what she wants out of a relationship the next time around. In her interview, Sparks shared the lessons she learned from her relationship with Derulo and what she wants to do differently in the future.

“The infatuation stage can be so exciting. Everything goes out of your head that you say you’re going to do. And instead you kind of just dive in…which is great because when it comes to love, sometimes you have to do that; but my biggest lesson for myself is: I need to slow that process down,” Sparks said. “Let’s get to know each other first and then we’ll decide if we want to dive in to make a commitment to one another or be boyfriend and girlfriend. And I have to take my biggest lessons and apply them to the now. I plan to go slower and I’m going to have to talk myself through things like, ‘Jordan, remember what you did last time…just take it slow.’”

“Also, I’ve learned to really evaluate why I’m attracted to that person,” the 25-year-old continued. “Is it really because they are going to complement me, not compliment like, ‘You look pretty,’ but complement in the sense that is this person going to be like, ‘Something came in and I think it’s a great opportunity for you’ or ‘I saw a book you would like to read’ or ‘I see you really enjoy charity work, how can I get involved too?’ To be more grounded on different things than just being cute.”
