Yasiin Bey Turned Away by South African Court for Wearing Turban
Earlier this year, Yasiin Bey, the Brooklyn-born MC formerly as Mos Def, was arrested in South Africa for using fraudulent documents (i.e. a world passport, which the country does not recognize as legitimate).
Today, March 8, prior to a court appearance regarding his arrest nearly two months ago, it was reported by TMZ that he was turned away upon entering the courthouse for refusing to take off the turban he was donning. He later was allowed entry when he changed into a loose purple scarf instead.
As a result of today’s hearing, it was agreed to postpone the hearing as the investigation needs more time to unfold, with a new date being set for later this month. In the meantime, Bey will remain free on bail.
It still remains unclear what sort of punishment he is facing if he is convicted of the charges against him.
