ScHoolBoy Q Wants Artists to Stop Giving Away Free Music

TDE rapper says mixtapes aren't a good thing.

These days artists have no problem dropping a mixtape here and there, but ScHoolBoy Q feels the fad has gotten out of hand. As the Top Dawg Entertainment member continues work on his Oxymoron major label debut, he sounded off on all the free music up for grabs.

During an interview with Invasion Radio, the West Coast rapper revealed why pro bono work is not on the agenda. "I mean, I'm tryna' sell records," he said.

Fearing that his words might be misconstrued, he further clarified his position. "I hate when I say the wrong s---, and I come off too cocky or un-humble, like I'm just this big artist, but it comes a time when you gotta' stop giving out so much free music. You give out so much free music, why would I buy your album?"

Despite not releasing a mixtape or anything free since 2009, ScHoolBoy is confident that his fans will dig in their pockets when the times comes."I believe I have die-hard fans [that are] gonna buy my album."

Bringing in revenue has been a portion of the 26-year-old's success, but his popularity continues to climb thanks to fan loyalty. Last year, ScHoolBoy dropped Habits & Contradictions, a 17-track release featuring the likes of A$AP Rocky, Curren$y and his TDE family members Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. The album was received well by critics, but ScHoolBoy wishes it was a bigger commercial success. "It definitely put me in a place where I'm successful in life, I would say I'm not done. I would have liked [it to be] bigger."

Regardless of his decision to make fans pay for his music, they'll likely turn out to support Oxymoron, which is due out sometime this year.

In addition to the solo project, ScHoolBoy is rumored to be joining a super group alongside A$AP Rocky.
