Erykah Badu Dishes on Her Personal Style With Vogue
Fresh off her music and lifestyle Genius Talk at BETX, Erykah Badu breaks down some of the most spiritually sound advice for rock star fashion via Vogue magazine.
“I make no distinction between what I wear on the street and the stage; it’s all just my style,” she tells the fashion bible. “I don’t work with a stylist, and I never plan what I’m going to wear, it’s always an of-the-moment thing.”
That sense of freedom even crosses gender boundaries for Badu, who fittingly, also just picked up the 2015 Ella Fitzgerald Award at the Festival Internationale de Jazz de Montréal. “I love shopping in the men’s department,” she said, reflecting for a moment on her 2014 Givenchy ads, and that one time when she was 14-years-old and featured in The Dallas Morning News wearing men's pants hiked up, and gathered around the waist. “I was the weird kid, I liked to wear what everyone else wasn’t.”
Her style influences, she noted, include: David Bowie, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and Chaka Khan.
As for her own signature steez –– bangles and head gear –– she explained, “I’ve always enjoyed dressing my head, whether it’s headwraps, hats, or wigs, I’m not sure why. I think that’s just where my mojo lives ... Accessories really are everything for me. I travel with a black body bag full of them when I’m on tour. I’ll throw in my Yoruba beads, my Maasai beads — and there’s space for six hats in my hat box.” Killer.
