Taraji P. Henson Joins Lee Daniels's Empire
Taraji P. Henson will star opposite her Hustle & Flow co-star in Lee Daniels's upcoming television drama Empire. Henson will play Terrence Howard's ex-wife in the film, set in the world of a multi-generational hip hop empire.
Henson's character is described as a "total bada**" who has just been released from prison after serving 17 years for dealing drugs — money she funneled into her husband's then-fledgling music empire. Released for good behavior, she now wants what's hers. She's the real force behind his rise to superstardom and champions her son Jamal's (Jussie Smollett) career, but that puts her at odds with her ex, who has an issue with their son's homosexuality.
Danny Strong, who wrote the screenplay for The Butler, which was produced and directed by Daniels, will pen the script for Empire, while Daniels will make his TV directing debut with the project. Image Entertainment's Brian Grazer is producing.
