Beyoncé on Etta James Passing: "A Huge Loss"
Beyoncé had nothing but love for legendary singer Etta James upon hearing word of the soul singer's passing. The pop superstar reacted to the sad news by reflecting on the impactful legacy James left behind.
"This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time," Beyoncé wrote in a statement on her website. "I am so fortunate to have met such a queen. Her musical contributions will last a lifetime."
As previously reported, Etta James died today at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, California at the age of 73. The "At Last" singer endured an ongoing battle with chronic leukemia and reportedly also suffered from dementia and kidney failure.
In remembering James, Beyoncé recalled her experience portraying her in the 2008 film Cadillac Records.
"Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter."
"She was fearless, and had guts," Bey added. "She will be missed."
