Dear Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer: Let Drake Be Great
Drake’s VIEWS has been setting quite a few chart records.
For the ninth week in a row, the album has held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, pulling ahead of Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP to claim the third-most weeks at No. 1 by a hip-hop album. Even with all this success, the Toronto rapper is still chasing the second place and all-time records, which are held by MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice.
Ice’s To the Extreme spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the charts in 1990 and 1991, while Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt 'Em spent a whopping 21 weeks at the top of the charts during the 1990.
VIEWS earned 111,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 30, according to Nielsen Music. Of that total, only 25,000 were in traditional album form. Drake’s fourth solo studio album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has yet to leave the top slot.
Beyoncé’s Lemonade finished No. 2 on the new Billboard 200 chart this past week, which had it rising one spot with 48,000 units. Since the album debuted at No. 1 10 weeks ago, it has never left the top four.
