The Lego Movie built itself into a surefire franchise this weekend, with an astounding $69.1 million take at the box office. The family-friendly film, one of the most critically-acclaimed in the history of the genre, is voiced by Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks and Will Ferrell.
The weekend's other star-powered new release, The Monuments Men, also performed better than expected with $22.7 million and a second place finish. The film, starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and several other A-listers, managed to find a sizeable audience despite bad buzz after its release date was pushed from December to February.
Ride Along dropped to third place, but the Kevin Hart-Ice Cube starrer crossed the $100 million mark to $105 million by the end of the weekend. Rumor has it that a sequel is already in the works.
Disney's animated hit Frozen and That Awkward Moment, starring Michael B. Jordan and Zac Efron, rounded out the top five.
Next week, RoboCop and About Last Night, starring Hart and Regina Hall, will vie for Valentine's Day audiences. Will the Real Husbands of Hollywood star score two films in the top five?
