Can't blame a guy for shooting his shot with a woman ... even if it means putting yourself out there in public for a celebrated, gold medal-winning gymnast on USA's Final Five squad.

That's exactly what Oakland Raiders tight end Colton Underwood did with Aly Raisman ... and it worked, as the star gymnast agreed to go out on a date with him.

Underwood, 24, strategically worked his connections to reach out to Raisman, 22, as his teammate Andrew East is married to former Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson.

The next step had Colton recording a video with Yahoo Sports, officially asking Aly out on a double date the next time she's in the Bay Area.

Not only did Aly take Colton up on the offer, but also tweeted the rookie tight end Sunday, thanking him for the sweet video.

Of course, Colton answered her right back.

Yes, we'd call this a touchdown!

Just don't fumble on the date, young man.
