Simone Biles Says Marrying Husband Jonathan Owens ‘Topped’ Her First Olympics Win
Despite being the G.O.A.T. in gymnastics, Simone Biles says her nuptials to husband Jonathan Owens trumps the first major milestone of her career.
The 37-medal holder is front and center on the cover of Vanity Fair, and sis looks magnificent! During her candid interview with the publication, she opened up on her relationship with the NFL safety and gushed about what attracted her to him. As she reflected on her early beginnings in gymnastics, Biles reveals none of that compares to the day she walked down the aisle.
“I’ve never had so much fun in my life,” she says of their destination wedding in Cabo in May that welcomed 144 guests. The duo also exchanged vows a month before in an intimate court house ceremony in Houston. “I was 19 when I won my first Olympics, and I was like, How am I supposed to top this? My wedding topped it. It was the greatest feeling ever.”
Biles and Owens first entered each other's orbit in 2020 during the pandemic when the gymnast was overcoming a breakup. That's when her friend and fellow gymnast Jordan Chiles suggested she join the exclusive dating app, Raya.
"My guard went straight up when she said dating site,” Biles admitted to the publication. The first week she matched with the athlete, and then they met in person the following week. "And the rest is history. We were hooked," she said.
While Biles blushed about her hubby's good looks, she says he's more than meets the eye.
"If I’m going to be honest, obviously he’s very fine,” she explained.“[But] besides his looks, he was so sweet and kind, and I think what I liked about him was his confidence. He truly believes he’s the best at everything."
From having a whirlwind courtship to saying "I do," their marriage is now bi-coastal as Owens is based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin while he plays for the Packers.
“I cried a lot,” said Biles of their long-distance relationship. While acknowledging their demanding careers, she still desires more quality time with him.
“We’re both so busy, so it’s not like I’m sitting [around] waiting for him to come home, but it’s just hard.”
But, what's still hard for some to believe is when Owens confessed on "The Pivot Podcast" last year that he was not aware of the magnitude of who Biles was when they met.
Still, he says she "piqued" his interest in the dating app and then found her profile on Instagram.
“I was like, man, she got a lot of followers, she must be pretty good," he told Vanity Fair.
